With the Catholic faith, a marriage solemnized inside a church by a Catholic priest and witnessed by your family and friends is the total #WeddingGoals for most Filipino Catholics. Here's a quick guide on everything you need to know about the requirements for applying for a Catholic wedding.

Quick List: Catholic Church Wedding Requirements

  • Baptismal Certificate (New copy for Marriage Purposes)
  • Confirmation Certificate (New copy for Marriage Purposes)
  • Publication of Marriage Banns
  • Permission from the Bride’s Parish
  • Canonical Interview
  • Pre-Marriage/Pre-Cana Seminar
  • Confession
  • List of names and addresses of principal sponsors
  • Marriage license. If previously married, marriage certificate.

Note: This list is based on the requirements from Cebu City, specifically the Archdiocesan Shrine of St. Therese of the Child Jesus in Lahug.

Quick Info: Catholic Church Wedding Application Validity

  • The validity of the church requirements was not explicitly mentioned to us, but as a rule of thumb, the certificates are said to be valid for 6 months. You may ask your church about this.

  • Since you cannot complete all the requirements for a Catholic church wedding without the marriage license, you may begin processing this at least 3 months prior to your wedding.

  • You may reserve a schedule for your wedding even if you haven't completed your requirements yet. It's best to schedule your wedding at least 3 to 6 months prior to your planned wedding date.

    • You must go to the church office personally to schedule your wedding (no need for you and your partner to go together); they will not entertain calls or e-mails regarding this.

    • To reserve your slot, you must provide 50% downpayment. This depends on the church. Ours was roughly 10,000php for the wedding, so the downpayment was 5,000php.

Tips and Tricks

Baptismal Certificate

Where to get?
  • Your Parish church. By Parish church, this means the church where you were baptized, regardless of whether you moved to another place after your baptism.
How much?
  • Depends on the church. Prepare roughly 100php per copy.
How long?
  • You can just wait for this. But if the priest isn't available to sign, you may want to go back the next day.
Tips:
  • Note that you only need 1 copy of the baptismal certificate. The church will collect the original copy upon submission. No photocopies required.

Confirmation Certificate

Where to get?
  • The church where you were confirmed.
  • If you haven't been confirmed yet, you only need to present a photocopy of your baptismal certificate (with "for marriage purposes" annotation) to apply for confirmation.
How much?
  • Depends on the church. Prepare roughly 100php per copy.
  • If you haven't been confirmed yet, roughly 250php all in all (150php for the registration and 100php for the certificate). The registration fee is inclusive of 1 sponsor/witness. For additional sponsors, you pay roughly 150php each. Note that you only need 1 sponsor.
  • For confirmations with special schedule (i.e., schedule of your choice, not the usual schedule of the church, which is once a month for everyone)
How long?
  • If you've already been confirmed, you can just wait for the certificate. But if the priest isn't available to sign, you may want to go back the next day.
  • If you haven't been confirmed, it takes about 3-5 working days for your certificate to be released.
Tips:
  • Note that you only need 1 copy of the confirmation certificate. The church will collect the original copy upon submission. No photocopies required.
  • The confirmation does not need to be in the same church you've been baptized. You can have your confirmation, if you haven't done so yet, in the same church you plan to have your wedding.

Publication of Marriage Banns

Where to get?
  • Your Parish church. By Parish church, this means the church where you were baptized, regardless of whether you moved to another place after your baptism.
  • The church where you plan to get married will issue 2 marriage banns: one for you and one for your partner. Either they will mail this to the address of your Parish church, or they will give the marriage banns to you for you to hand-carry to your Parish church.
How much?
  • Depends on the church. Prepare roughly 100php per copy.
How long?
  • 3 weeks
Tips:
  • Marriage banns is a piece of paper that notifies the public of your upcoming wedding. This will be announced to your Parish church for 3 consecutive Sundays. The purpose of the marriage banns is to clarify whether your planned marriage has no impediments.
  • After the announcements, either your Parish church will mail the results to the church where you plan to get married, or you will go to the Parish church to claim the results and hand-carry it to the church of your wedding.
  • Impediments to a marriage includes, but not limited to the following: a previous marriage wherein the spouse is still alive or if the marriage has not been anulled; you and your partner are relatives; you and your partner are of the same gender; etc.
  • If you're a paranoid bride like me, an old flame who simply does not want your marriage to push through is not an impediment.

Permission from the Bride’s Parish

Where to get?
  • Your Parish church. By Parish church, this means the church where you were baptized, regardless of whether you moved to another place after your baptism.
How much?
  • Depends on the church. Prepare roughly 1,500php per copy.
How long?
  • You can just wait for this. But if the priest isn't available to sign, you may want to go back the next day.
Tips:
  • This is also called a Jurisdictional Permit.
  • Note that you only need 1 copy. The church will collect the original copy upon submission. No photocopies required.
  • This is only needed if your wedding is to take place in another church.

Canonical Interview

Where to get?
  • The church where you plan to get married
How much?
  • Depends on the church. But usually, this is for free.
How long?
  • Depends on the church. There is usually a monthly schedule for canonical interviews. The interview lasts roughly 2 to 3 hours.
Tips:
  • The canonical interview is done on the nearest schedule to your wedding date, usually 1-2 weeks prior.
  • There is usually a monthly schedule for everyone; no special schedules. But this depends on the church.
  • You will be given questionnaires prior to your interview: one for you and one for your partner. You need to fill this up prior to your scheduled interview.
  • The questionnaire covers basic questions about the Catholic principles on marriage, marriage impediments, list of principal sponsors, and some personal information.

Pre-Marriage/Pre-Cana Seminar

Where to get?
  • The church where you plan to get married
How much?
  • Depends on the church. Prepare roughly 250php per couple.
How long?
  • Depends on the church. Ours took the whole day. Other churches schedule the seminar for 1 to 2 days. You will immediately be given a certificate after the seminar.
Tips:
  • The pre-cana seminar is done on the nearest schedule to your wedding date, usually a month prior.
  • There is usually a monthly schedule for everyone; no special schedules. But this depends on the church.

Confession

Where to get?
  • Any church, but preferably the church where you plan to get married.
How much?
  • Free
How long?
  • Less than 30 minutes.
Tips:
  • Note that this is entirely up to you and your conscience; your attendance will not be listed after you confess.
  • The church advises to do this a week or a few days before your wedding date.

List of names and addresses of principal sponsors

  • Some churches ask for a copy of your wedding invitation, just to make sure all the names of the sponsors are spelled correctly.
  • This is submitted together with all the other wedding requirements.

Marriage License

  • I created a separate post for this. For more information, check out Marriage License Requirements in the Philippines.

Marriage License Requirements in Philippines

Planning a wedding is like a walk in the park . . . Jurassic Park.
That's how stressful it is to plan a wedding. And when you're living in the Philippines, nothing is as stressful as going to the government office to get your marriage license. Here's a simple guide on the marriage license requirements in the Philippines.

Quick List: Marriage License Requirements

  • NSO Birth Certificate  (1 original, 2 photocopies)
  • Certificate of No Marriage (1 original, 2 photocopies)
  • Notarized affidavit of parental advice (if aged 25) /parental consent (if aged 18-24)
  • Certificate of Attendance in a pre-marriage counseling, family planning, and responsible parenthood seminar (1 original and 2 photocopies)
  • Community Tax Certificate or Cedula (1 original and 2 photocopies)
  • Barangay Certificate (1 original and 2 photocopies)
  • At least 2 valid IDs
  • Recent 1 x 1 photo (colored or black and white)
  • Marriage license application form

Note: This list is based on the requirements for Cebu City and locals. If one of the applicants is a foreigner, please contact the local civil registry office for more information.

Quick Info: Marriage License Validity

  • The marriage license is valid for 120 days  (4 months) from the date of issue.
  • An important tip is to start processing your marriage license 4 months before your wedding date. This will give you enough time to process the requirements, and you wouldn't have to worry about the validity period of the license once issued.

Tips and Tricks

NSO Birth Certificate and Certificate of No Marriage

Where to get?
  • NSO Office, NSO website, or NSO Satellite Offices

How much?
  • If you request online, roughly 300php per copy of the birth certificate and roughly 400php per copy of the CENOMAR.
  • If you request from the physical offices, roughly 100php to 150php per copy.
How long?
  • If you request online, about 3 to 5 working days.
  • If you request from the physical offices, within the day.
Tips:
  • Requesting online is hassle-free; you just need to pay the extra fees for delivery.
  • You need to be the one to receive your parcel. If not, you can always prepare a letter of authorization for whoever is at home.

Community Tax Certificate or Cedula and Barangay Certificate

Where to get?
  • Barangay Hall where you are residing
How much?
  • For Cedula, it depends on how much your salary is. They will also charge you extra for late registration. Computation for community tax = YTD gross income ÷ 1,000 + 5.
  • For Barangay Certificate, it depends whether the barangay will charge you. Prepare roughly 100php.
How long?
  • You can just wait for this. However, if the Barangay Captain isn't available to sign, you might want to come back the next day.
Tips:
  • A barangay certificate is simply your certificate of residence. It differs from a barangay clearance, which specifies that you are a resident with good standing and good moral character, and that you do not have any negative records.
  • This was the trickiest part for us, because the barangay will only issue a certificate if you are a registered (and active) voter in the same exact place.

Certificate of Attendance in a pre-marriage counseling, family planning, and responsible parenthood seminar

Where to get?
  • City /Municipal Health Department
How much?
  • Roughly 200php to 350php
How long?
  • May take half a day or the whole day. It depends on where you're applying for marriage license.
Tips:
  • You can only be accommodated if you are a registered (and active) voter in the same city/municipality. Some may ask for your Voter's Certificate, which you can request from the Comelec office.
  • This is usually scheduled during the weekday, office hours, so better to file a vacation/personal leave.
  • You and your spouse-to-be must go together when asking for a schedule.
  • Bring all of your requirements during the seminar. After the seminar, you will fill out the marriage license application form and submit all your requirements.

Marriage license application form

Where to get?
  • City /Municipal Health Department
How much?
  • Roughly 200php
How long?
  • 10 days after application date
Tips:
after knowing the Marriage License Requirements in the Philippines let us know some tips to get it.
  • You can only be accommodated if you are a registered (and active) voter in the same city/municipality.
  • You fill out this form immediately after the seminar (pre-marriage counseling), together with the submission of the other requirements.
