Start the year right by adopting a regular skincare routine!

I know it seems unlikely to have a decent skincare routine without spending an insane amount of money on beauty products.

However, as a frugal mom, I've found cheap (and all-natural) alternatives to expensive "cult favorites," and I can say that these worked really well for my skin type (I'm acne-prone)!

I use several different Human Nature products for my daily skincare routine.

This is NOT a paid advertisement for Human Nature. I just really love their products :-)
Prices are based on their 2019 catalogue.

Daily cleansing:

Human Nature Acne Defense Facial Wash (169.75)

I like how this facial wash so light and cool to the face.

It doesn't lather, though, which is typical for most natural-ingredient products. A pea-sized amount goes a long way.

My 100ml bottle has been with me for almost a year, and I still have about 30% to 40% of it!

And that's for cleansing twice a day: in the morning and before sleeping at night.

Toning:

Human Nature Acne Defense Face Toner (109.75)

The best thing about this toner is that it's not harsh to the skin.

It does have a leafy smell, though, but it's only expected, as it is tea tree-oil based (but not at all oily in consistency!).

I tone once per day, after my night-time facial cleansing.

Spot Treatment:

Human NatureAcne Defense Solution Gel (199.75)

As someone who has been plagued with acne since puberty, Human Nature's Acne Defense Solution Gel is the best spot treatment I've ever tried!

It doesn't dry out and flake your skin, unlike Benzac, and it doesn't have a creamy whitish tinge unlike the various Chinese products I used before in my teenage years (lol).

I use it once a day at night, but during my acne-prone days, I use it in the morning as well. It blends well to your skin, so you can wear makeup after.

Moisturizing:

Human Nature Sunflower Beauty Oil (174.75)

One of the most golden lessons my mother taught me is that you need to moisturize even though your skin might be oily, especially when you start to age (I'm in my late twenties).

I resisted my mom's advice because most of the moisturizers in the market are just so heavy and sticky on the face.

Human Nature's Sunflower Beauty Oil, however, seals the deal.

Surprisingly, it absorbs quite well on the skin and is not at all oily and sticky once you've applied it! It leaves a dewy, Korean-glass skin effect on your face.

I use it usually in the morning, with just one pump from its bottle (it already goes a long way).

It's great for moisturizing other parts of the body too, such as the soles of your feet or even your hair.

Twice-a-Week Exfoliating:

Human Nature Detoxifying Mask + Scrub (P249.75)

Just as important as cleansing and toning, I learned that you also need to exfoliate your skin twice or thrice a week.

I'm not a big fan of exfoliating tonics that would make your skin peel, so it was such a delight to discover Human Nature's Detoxifying Mask + Scrub.

As the product name suggests, you can use it as a mask (leave it on your skin for a few minutes), or as a scrub.

I love how it makes my skin feel smoother and far more supple. What's more is that it's quite gentle even on sensitive skin!

Sunscreen as Needed:

Human Nature SafeProtect for Babies and Kids (299.75)

I don't go out that much, so I don't use sunscreen every day.

But when I do, I use Human Nature's SafeProtect SPF30 for Babies & Kids. It's not specifically for the face, but I have it on hand for my daughter, so I try to make use of it for me as well to save money (lol).

What I like about it is that it's light on the skin and doesn't leave much of a whitish, creamy tinge when you apply it (it blends really well!).

And it has a really nice fruity smell too :-)

___

Again, I'd like to repeat that this isn't a paid sponsorship by Human Nature.

I really like their products because they are eco-friendly, easy to buy, and really affordable!

Imagine, all these would last me for at least 3 to 6 months! :-)

How about you, any affordable skincare products you love?

Last weekend, Amuma Childcare Services had a 2-hour free trial and open-house.

We have been doing quite well for almost a year without a yaya, but it's still nice to have a backup childcare plan in case of emergencies, or when situations arise where bringing a child can be quite inconvenient—or when parents simply want to have a little breather, even for just a few hours.

We took the chance to avail of Amuma's 2-hour free trial, and I must say, we're quite happy with our experience! (Even our little girl!) Here's our review:

    Convenient location

Amuma Childcare Services - Cebu is located on the 2nd floor of the Pacific Square Building at F. Cabahug St., Mabolo, Cebu City.

It's right across ICON Bar and Kima Glass; the same building with RCBC and Yakiniku Japanese Restaurant.

They also have a new branch in Makati that has recently opened. In Cebu, they plan to expand to Talisay and Lapu-Lapu, but no further details are available. Great news for parents!

    Reasonable rates

To summarize, their current rates in Cebu are the following:
    • Hourly rate: 99 pesos for a minimum of 5 hours; 175 pesos for 4 hours and below
    • Daily rate: 750 pesos for up to 8 hours
    • Weekly rate: 2, 500 for up to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week
    • Monthly rate: 6,000 pesos for up to 9 hours a day, 5 days a week, 20 days in a month

Here's a comprehensive guide of their rates as of June 8, 2019, which you can also download here.

    Clean and safe facilities

Prior to our schedule, we had a 15-minute facility tour guided by Amuma's owner herself.

They recently moved to a new location for their childcare facility on the 3rd floor of the same building (though the office is still located on the 2nd floor), which is bigger and safer and closer to the fire exit.

They have separate areas for the nursery room, toddler play area, common play area, sleeping area, diaper change area, and rest room.

All these are equipped with child-proofing and security amenities:

    • gated main entrance
    • CCTV cameras for each area
    • non-skid flooring
    • guards for sharp-edged corners
    • foam bricks for walls
    • elevated electrical sockets and plugs
    • smoke detectors
    • fire extinguishers,
    • flat panel TV that's wall-mounted

Of course, the facility is air-conditioned and they have first-aid kits too.

    Main entrance to childcare facility

What I noticed, though, is that the entrance to the childcare facility doesn't have a screen door, which I fear would let mosquitoes in (dengue season!).

I wasn't able to note this in their facility tour checklist, though. But so far, I didn't see any mosquitoes, and my daughter didn't get insect bites after the trial period. :-)

                                     Common play area

It must also be noted that electronic devices and picture-taking are strictly not allowed in the facility for safety reasons.

We also asked if we can access the CCTV footage to monitor our child, but it's also not allowed, which we understand.

They provide photos of your child from time to time, though, through Facebook Messenger. :-)

    Competent and patient childcare assistants

What I like most about Amuma is that they have stringent qualifications for their childcare assistants (CCAs or yayas).

They hire TESDA-certified caregivers, or yayas who have worked for at least 5 years with a certificate of recommendation from their previous employer.

All their CCAs have also undergone comprehensive health, security, and psychological checks, as well as first-aid trainings—pretty impressive, if I say so myself.

My daughter is quite clingy, and it was the first time in a long time that she's been separated from me.

My husband and I were also super anxious when we left our daughter at Amuma, but their CCAs were very competent in handling our clingy girl.

For children spending longer hours in the facility, Amuma has several activities to engage kids, such as reading, games, handcrafts, and more.

Since we were only there for a couple of hours and is only a trial period (it was also a Sunday), there weren't a lot of kids.

At the end of the two-hour trial, our daughter was crying. She is still exclusively breastfed and rarely drinks formula milk from a bottle.

She was sleepy by then and she usually throws a tantrum when overtired; when she's at this point, breastfeeding is the best way to comfort her.

It was a good thing the CCAs were very patient, even when our daughter refused her milk and refused to be held. We arrived a few minutes after her meltdown, thank goodness.

Upon pickup, the CCAs gave us a "report" about our daughter's behavior, her activities, what she ate/drank, etc.

One more thing is that only the parents or registered guardians are allowed to pick up your child. Otherwise, you need to prepare an authorization letter and IDs for your substitute guardian.

    Reliable operating hours

Amuma is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

However, from reading the comments and reviews, if you plan to drop off your kid at night, it's best to inform the office at least a few hours ahead so that they can prepare accordingly.

I agree that it makes business sense to only operate at night when there are actually kids to take care of, and as a responsible adult, I do believe that setting appointments is a good courtesy to make :-)

    Our verdict

So far, our experience with Amuma was better than expected. We thought our daughter would cry the whole time!

We are definitely going back, but maybe only during the weekends and only for a few hours, until our little girl is ready to be left there for a longer duration—or until she finally weans (lol).

If you plan to check out Amuma, you can schedule a facility tour.

Just email them at amumachildcare@gmail.com with the subject "Facility Tour Request."

They have tour schedules from Monday to Saturday. Just be sure to book a schedule at least a day before.

As a mother, I always worry if what I'm feeding my daughter is healthy, especially when I'm going out of the house.

It's often difficult to bring homemade baby food and snacks when you're out and about, so it's unavoidable to opt for packaged baby snacks from time to time.

I know a lot of mothers who are "healthy food nazis," to the point of shaming other moms when we opt to feed our baby with what they consider as junk food. (Believe me, I've had my share.)

But not all packaged baby food is harmful nor unhealthy.

If you know where to look and if you do your research, you'll find perfectly healthy and safe commercial baby food such as Nosh Baby Munchables!

Nosh Baby Munchables is an organic teething wafer that comes in a variety of flavors.

In the Philippines, and particularly at Baby Company at SM Seaside Cebu, the flavors available are Strawberry and Beet, Blueberry and Pomegranate, Banana and Mango, and Apple and Cinnamon.

I was one of the lucky mommies who were given the product for free for the purpose of reviewing it.

Rest assured that my review is without a dash of bias and is 100% truthful. So here's what I thought on Nosh Baby Munchables:

    Organic and allergen-free

All of Nosh's baby food products are SDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO. The wafers are baked instead of fried, and are made without artificial colors and flavoring.

Since we have a family history of allergies (me in particular), it makes me feel safe that the wafers are free of 8 common allergens.

    Great for teething babies

No teeth? No problem! The wafers dissolve easily, so there's not a lot of sticky mess.

Since my baby already has some teeth (4 and 3 more coming!), the wafers help in massaging the rest of her toothless gums as she munches on them.

Aids in baby's motor skill development

The wafers are nicely sized for little hands, but it does tend to break off easily. (My daughter enjoyed breaking them, by the way.)

The good thing about this is that grabbing the little pieces becomes a great motor skill training activity for babies and toddlers, so it's still a win.

    Interesting yet appealing flavors

Some of the flavors are not native to the Philippines (such as beet, pomegranate, and blueberry).

However, the flavors are quite mild (I tried it myself) and the taste is not too sweet, just right.

My daughter finished her first pack without qualms, so I guess I could say that she liked it. (She asked for a second helping too!)

Convenient snack for on-the-go moms and babies

The wafers come individually sealed in packets of two, so it stays fresh even when my daughter isn't able to finish the whole pack.

It's also handy and fits easily into any bag, though you might want to handle it with caution, as it easily breaks.

Nosh Baby Munchables are offered at P195 per box, and each box contains 26 pieces—a great deal at an affordable price!

If you'd like to give it a try, head on to your nearest SM Mall or Baby Company Boutique.

Mealtimes aren't exactly my favorite part of babycare, much more when caring for a toddler.

You have to make sure your little one is in the perfect mood to eat, lest you encounter tantrums and flying eating utensils.

My one-year-old daughter often simply accidentally knocks over her eating utensils, particularly her drinking cup. Either way, it's not always fun to clean up after her.

Which is why I've been on the lookout for a baby-proof tumbler—something that isn't easily knocked over and spilled.

I found my godsend through Baby Company's All Things Baby Sale special offer for Mom Card holders: the no-spill MIGHTumbler.

The MIGHTumbler has five fun designs to choose from, each with dainty pastel colors perfect for babies and toddlers, with cute animal prints to spark your young one's imagination.

The tumbler is made of sturdy and lightweight plastic material (which is BPA-free!).

What makes it unique is that it has a suctioned bottom so that it's not easily tumbled when accidentally knocked over. The lid is air-tight, keeping it away from spills.

I also tested it myself, and the MIGHTumbler faithfully delivered on their promise—it's truly spill-free and tumble-proof!

Mealtimes will be easier now that I don't have to worry about our daughter throwing away her drinking utensil—MIGHTumbler is sturdy like that.

It's also ideal for on-the-go moms and babies, as it can hold up to approximately 500 mL of liquids, keeping you fresh and hydrated when you go out for a stroll.

The size of the tumbler, however, was bigger than I expected. Nevertheless, it can still fit snugly into your diaper bag (or a large handbag).

Here are the available designs at the Baby Company Boutique at SM Seaside Cebu. They don't have the lime green panda, but they will probably restock soon!

The MIGHTumbler is an exclusive offer to all Mom Card holders as part of Baby Company's #AllThingsBabySale.

It's available at an affordable price of P299.75 with every P500 single-receipt spend from Baby Company. The promo runs from July 1 to 31, 2018.

Mom Tip: If you don't have a Mom Card yet, you can get it for only P100 at any Baby Company branch, either at their stand-alone boutique or inside the SM Department Store.

Just fill out the application form, and you can get your card in just a few minutes on the same day.
